 INTRODUCTION
Millions of people the world over find themselves helplessly trapped in unfulfilling jobs. Going to work is a daily ordeal that many go through. This is the situation where one finds oneself in the wrong career, profession or job. Have you ever heard someone use the expression ‘I hate my job?’ The average person spends about forty years of his life working. Can you imagine what it will be like to spend forty years of your productive life in a profession you totally detest?
Real fulfillment that leads to success in one’s chosen career comes from doing what one likes and enjoys doing. When you find yourself in the right kind of job, in an area of your natural talents and abilities, your creative abilities are turned on into full gear and every working minute of the day is an experience worth repeating. The career in which you will make your greatest impact is that in which you are able to exhibit your natural talents, and which is in tune with your temperament. You are stimulated to unleash your creative genius and success will come without too much effort. Examine the lives of people who have made tremendous achievements in their chosen careers, and you will find out that they chose careers that they have a natural flair for. If you love your work you don’t feel as if it is work, you will have job and personal satisfaction, you will look forward to going to work, you will be optimistic about your future, you will feel energized by you work, your contribution will be respected and appreciated, you are passionate about your work and not ashamed of it and you will definitely be successful.
Although aptitude and interest are both important factors to consider in choosing a career path, personality and temperament can make the difference between loving a career and tolerating or even hating it. An introvert, for example, probably won’t be happy in a career that requires a great deal of personal interaction. An extrovert, on the other hand, won’t be happy working alone all the time. People who excel in their careers are usually highly motivated and energized by their jobs. They wake up in the morning eager to get to work because their career lets them take advantage of the natural preferences and strengths of their personality. Their job is not a chore to be endured but a medium through which to exercise their talents. They achieve the most important of things in job satisfaction: "a fit" with who they are.
Every one is born with God-given abilities and a temperamental disposition; we all have unique skills that come to us naturally. It is these that should determine our choice of career.
Are you an introvert or an extrovert? What skills come naturally to you? What activities do you enjoy participating in? Take out some time to examine yourself critically, answer these questions correctly and then choose the career that gives you the opportunity to use these skills. No matter who you are, what your background is and where you are located geographically, success is within your reach if only you harness your talents and apply them in the right professional environment.
What are you interested in and passionate about?
Are you studying the right subjects / courses that are needed for this job and career type?
Do you have the right personality, attitude, motivation and behavioural style for the job / career?
One of the biggest problems in our country today is our failure to identify and detect the potentials and talents in our young people, especially during their formative and adolescent years, develop and harness these talents and guide our young generation into the right careers where they can make a meaningful impact to aid and speed up the development of this nation.
As a result of this lack of guidance, or wrong guidance in the cases where people are coerced and forced into the wrong kind of professions, thousands of our citizens find themselves making no meaningful impact in their chosen fields. Every year, thousands of our students fail in their examinations because they find themselves studying the wrong subjects, and also because many teachers, who do not have the natural flair and abilities for the job find themselves in the teaching profession for various reasons. We have engineers, medical doctors, nurses, social workers etc. who are not naturally inclined to work in those fields – the results being poor delivery of medical and health services, poor design and construction of our roads and other structural facilities, poor implementation of government policies, stunted economic growth, high levels of corruption due to the lack of impetus on the part of the leadership to check it, lackadaisical attitudes towards work etc. What you enjoying doing, you spend time and concentrate effort on, you think of better and more innovative ways to accomplish your tasks, you push yourself to your maximum limits. This results in success. You cannot put a round peg in a square hole and expect it to fit. You cannot use a spoon to cut down a tree.
In this book I will teach you how you can discover, develop and harness your God-given talents and abilities and choose the right careers in order to achieve success and have a fulfilling and enjoyable working life. Go on; begin your journey into self-discovery.
